Fidyah and Kaffarah (also referred to as Fidya and Kaffara) are obligatory donations which you may need to pay, if you are unable to fast during Ramadan.
If you cannot fast over Ramadan and you cannot make up the fast later, for example, because of old age, illness or pregnancy, you must, if you have the means, make up for this through the payment of Fidyah. The requirement for Fidyah is to provide one poor or needy person with two meals, for each day that a fast is missed.
Those who have a valid reason not to fast must make up the missed days of fasting later in the year. The days are equally matched, so if you miss four days of fasting, you must fast for four days later in the year. If you have a terminal health condition or won’t be able to fast before the next Ramadan, you must make a donation for Fidyah for every day of fasting that is missed.
If you deliberately miss or break a fast without a good reason, you must pay Kaffarah, or fast for 60 consecutive days (excluding days like Eid day when it is forbidden to fast) If a fast is missed during these 60 days, you will need to start from the beginning to ensure your 60 fasts are consecutive. If you are physically unable to do this then your are required to pay the Kaffarah. The requirement for Kaffarah is to provide one poor or needy person with two meals a day, for 60 days.
It is the intention to break your fast that is important, if you accidentally eat during Ramadan and genuinely forget that you’re fasting, for example taking a sip of water then realising it’s Ramadan, you are not liable to pay Kaffarah as your fast isn’t broken.
You should try and pay your Fidyah or Kaffarah as soon as possible
With us, your Fidyah costs just £3 a day and will mean a person in need will receive two nutritious meals.
– The cost of Fidyah for the whole of Ramadan totals £90
– The cost of Kaffarah totals £180
Fasting during Ramadan is an obligation on all adult Muslims. If you are exempt from this obligation due to sickness/old age, then you must give Fidyah, if you have the means to do so.

Moreover, if you miss a fast without a valid reason, this is a serious matter. If you are unable to fast the 60 consecutive days, then Kaffarah is obligatory upon you.
We use 100% of donated Fidyah and Kaffarah funds in line with Quranic guidance and use it to provide meals for the very poorest and destitute families.
