I Can’t Endure More Suffering in Gaza and I Can’t Leave either. Maybe Comfort Lies in Death

The suffering in Gaza has become unprecedented in 2025. More than a year into this inhumane war, families like mine are still making impossible decisions, where survival itself becomes a struggle we might lose.

Gaza has endured over 500 days of incessant violence and devastation. Once a land where life existed with hope, it has become a location of suffering now. Basic activities such as breathing, getting food, or obtaining water have turned into an insurmountable task. It’s as if we have been living in a continuous nightmare, and the chance to wake up becomes less with each passing day.

Suffering in Gaza: A Family’s Journey

My family and I are displaced and staying with my mother. My siblings, their families, and I all lived in one house that was once her serene sanctuary. Now, with so many of us sharing the available space and resources, the pressure is evident. The toll on the mind is as large as the one on the body. My mother, who used to make do herself, now worries every day about the basics: food, water, and electricity that seems to be disappearing faster. Our former peaceful home has turned into a site of daily tension, where even sharing a meal can provoke fights over who has more.

We had a life before this nightmare started. I had work, my kids attended school, and Gaza felt like a place where dreams still existed. Now, I long for those days when I could just drive through my beautiful city, feeling its rhythm. I really miss the simplicity of an ordinary life, Allah knows. I never thought I would miss Gaza so intensely, but now, I wish for its safety, its beauty, and its life to come back. But today, Gaza lies in ruins, shattered beyond recognition.

Bitter Choices during suffering in Gaza

When I think about how to survive the suffering in Gaza, I face three bitter choices, none of them easy:

Option One: Endure the Pain Until the War Ends

This feels like the hardest choice, but it’s the only hope I have left. If I survive, maybe one day the  war and suffering in Gaza will be over, and we can go home. But even if we do get to return, the suffering in Gaza will be a long and painful one. Our houses are leveled, and much of Gaza is still not habitable. Renting a place is virtually impossible, and even basic services such as electricity and water cost an astronomical amount. The infrastructure that supported our existence has been destroyed, and it will be an enormous task to rebuild. Maybe, against all probability, we can restore Gaza—just like the Palestinians have done previously.

Option Two: Escape Gaza to Start a New Life

Escaping from Gaza is another possibility; it’s not without serious challenges. The price of escaping Gaza has escalated—to more than $6,000 for an adult and $3,000 for a child. Even if I do get the money, rebuilding in a new city has its own challenges. Getting a job, finding a home, and finding schools for my kids are all intimidating tasks. In Egypt, things are still difficult for Palestinians, and it is expensive to live. Add on top of that the danger of leaving my family behind in Gaza, with no idea whether I will ever have them again.

Option Three: The Ultimate Escape—Death

This is not an option, but in times of desperation, it seems like a means to put an end to the perpetual agony. No more pain, no more hunger, no more fear, and no more suffering in Gaza. But I know in my heart that death is not the solution. It would not be the peace I yearn for. We should Keep going with strength and hope towards life.
