Every Minute, Death Edges Closer to Families in Gaza: A Desperate Cry for Help

Occupied Palestinian Territory, Gaza—

Every passing minute, families in Gaza are drawn to the edge of hopelessness. With each bombardment, with each bomb that drops, things become even more desperate. The world looks on as the people of Gaza, especially families, find themselves in the midst of an ongoing humanitarian emergency.  What ought to be a period of peace is now a constant fight for survival, a struggle against time as death draws nearer with each ticking second.

A Life Interrupted: The Struggle of Displaced Families in Gaza

Recently, We were forced to leave our homes after Israeli instructions. Here, things are no different. Although we relocated, there is no actual security. The bombings persist. As a matter of fact, within the last half-hour, there was an airstrike in a neighborhood where we fled, claiming 12 lives and leaving several injured.

Families in Gaza have nowhere to hide. No one is safe here. They flee, expecting salvation, only to encounter more devastation. Harsh reality is there is no safe haven in Gaza.

Most families in Gaza, including mine, are now sharing the same roof, struggling to survive together. We have 7 adults and 20 children, but there are others who have even fewer. Some families have been reduced to camping on the streets, with no shelter and no access to food, clean water, or toilets. It’s a tragic sight, and it’s occurring all over Gaza.

The Struggle for Water: A Precious and Scarce Resource

Water — so fundamental and yet so necessary — has become a luxury. Due to the Gaza conflict interrupting power, the municipalities cannot pump water into homes. Families in gaza like mine, now need to hunt for water. An easy task that used to take minutes has now become a backbreaking daily ordeal.

We were able to collect some water containers, but that will not last us more than a couple of days.

My mother has begun to ration already. We only flush the toilet twice a day, and we clean for praying with minimal water. My children also have to perform tayammum (ritual washing without water) before praying. My mother comforts them, “Allah will accept your prayers, my dear children, because you are innocent and pure.” But even that minor consolation can’t hide the fact. The situation is desperate, and the people of Gaza are starving. No one can foresee how soon we shall be allowed water again, and with every new day, our survival hangs more precariously in the balance.

Food Scarcity and the Daily Struggle for Survival

Access to food is no less difficult. Long queues form outside bakeries, where families wait for hours just to get their share of bread. My brother-in-law spends hours waiting for bread, and even then, we are limited to what we can get.

At my parents’ house, we’ve been rationing our food, making sure every meal counts. We have to be resourceful, using as little water as possible to cook and clean. My mother’s ingenuity is a blessing. She turns rice and vegetables into a meal that stretches for everyone.

It’s in these small moments, though, that we find hope. Even amidst the fear, even in this war-torn region, we manage to bring small joys — like finding a shop with chocolate spread or my brother-in-law bringing falafel for the whole family.

Life Under Constant Threat: A Frustration That Cannot Be Ignored

But as we proceed with our daily chores, I am swept away by the harsh reality of it all. Families in Gaza live in fear all the time. Getting into a bathroom or flipping a light switch has become a luxury. We are thankful for each little bit of resource we manage to get, but it feels like a battle we can never win.

We are compelled to ask ourselves, how much longer can this last? Each passing minute without resolution takes us nearer to the unavoidable. With every passing day, Gaza families confront not just the physical risks but also the mental cost of constant fear, insecurity, and difficulty.

A Call for Help: The World Must Not Turn Away

I find myself frustrated — frustrated that the lives of Palestinians in Gaza appear to be ignored by the world. But it’s necessary that we don’t get stuck on this frustration. Rather, I urge those who are reading this to see the urgency of the situation.

We require assistance. The Gaza people require your assistance now. With every passing minute, our survival becomes more difficult. It’s time to stand together with families in Gaza, to raise our voices and call for action. Every life counts, and every lost minute can mean the difference between life and death to many innocent individuals.
