Sadaqah for the Sake of Allah – What the Quran and Hadith Teach Us

Charity in Islam is of great significance. Whereas Zakat is obligatory, Sadaqah is optional charity that exhibits a believer’s sincerity, pity, and love for Allah. The most rewarding type of Sadaqah for the sake of Allah with no expectation of praise or reward from humanity.

In this article, we discuss how to offer Sadaqah for Allah’s sake, why intention (niyyah) is important, and how the simple act can earn tremendous blessings in this world and the afterlife. We will also include corresponding Quranic verses and authentic Hadiths to corroborate our knowledge.

What is Sadaqah?

Sadaqah for the sake of Allah (Arabic: صدقة) is derived from the root word “sidq,” which signifies sincerity and truthfulness. In Islam, Sadaqah is any act of kindness or generosity done voluntarily by a person with the intention of attaining the pleasure of Allah. It’s not just about donating money—it can be any good deed performed in earnest for the sake of others. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) eloquently stated, “Every good deed is Sadaqah” (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 2989). This Hadith is an indicator that even the smallest thing done with a good intention is regarded as charity in Islam.

There are numerous simple yet profound ways to give Sadaqah in daily life. Here are some examples of common forms of Sadaqah for the sake of Allah:

Donating money to the poor or needy

Donating food or water to the hungry or thirsty

Assisting someone in hardship or trouble

Smiling to someone or being nice

Taking something harmful from a public road or path
Sharing good knowledge that benefits people

Making genuine du’a (prayer) for a person

These deeds might be little, but if done out of heartfelt intention, they are most rewarding. Sadaqah for the sake of Allah in Islam is an expression of charity and kindness, and it teaches us that each one of us—irrespective of our wealth—can donate somehow. Through your time, words, efforts, or prayers, you can donate Sadaqah daily.

Why Give Sadaqah for the Sake of Allah?

The final aim of a believer is to gain Allah’s pleasure. We are making an investment in Akhirah (Hereafter) when we donate Sadaqah for the sake of Allah with the proper intention.

▶ Quranic Verse:

“The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills.” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:261)

This verse illustrates how giving in the way of Allah leads to multiplied rewards—up to 700 times or more.

The Importance of Niyyah (Intention)

In Islam, your intention (niyyah) determines whether or not your Sadaqah for the sake of Allah (charity) is accepted. Allah sees your heart, not merely your actions. If you donate with honesty to make Allah happy, your charity is accepted and rewarded.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Deeds are evaluated on the basis of intentions, and each individual will receive what they had intended.”

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 1)

If one gives charity for ostentation or admiration, Allah won’t accept it. This action becomes null and void.

Allah narrates in the Qur’an:

“Do not annul your acts of charity by reminders of generosity or by injury.”

(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:264)

This implies that the reward is lost if you remind others of what you gave or hurt them.

Therefore, before giving Sadaqah, check your Niyyah. If it’s solely for Allah, even a small thing becomes precious.

How to Give Sadaqah Sincerely for Allah

Here are some practical steps to ensure your Sadaqah is given for the sake of Allah:

  1. Make a clear Niyyah (Intention)
    • Before giving, silently say in your heart: “O Allah, I give this only for Your pleasure.”
  2. Give Privately (If Possible)
    • Avoid showing off. The Prophet ✨ said:

“Seven will be shaded by Allah on the Day of Judgment… one of them is a man who gives charity so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand has given.” (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 1421)

  1. Give from What You Love
    • Allah says:

“Never will you attain the good [reward] until you give [in the way of Allah] from that which you love.” (Surah Aal-Imran, 3:92)

  1. Help Continuously
    • Even small regular charity is beloved to Allah.

“The most beloved deeds to Allah are those that are consistent, even if they are small.” (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 783)

  1. Pray for Acceptance
    • After giving, ask Allah to accept your deed, just like Prophet Ibrahim did:

“Our Lord, accept [this] from us. Indeed, you are the hearing, the knowing.” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:127)

Benefits of Sadaqah for the Sake of Allah

Sadaqah for the sake of Allah made sincerely has advantages. It erases sins in the same way as water extinguishes fire, as stated by the Prophet ﷺ:

“Sadaqah extinguishes sins just as water extinguishes fire.” (Tirmidhi)

It also guards you against tribulations, gives you peace of mind, and is a demonstration of firm belief. And it doesn’t deplete your riches—Allah raises it instead. As the Prophet ﷺ had stated:

“Charity does not decrease wealth.” (Sahih Muslim)

Sadaqah is an easy deed but with enormous benefits, here and hereafter.

Sadaqah Jariyah: A Charity That Never Ends

In Islam, Sadaqah Jariyah is charity that keeps rewarding you even after you die. When you give to something that still benefits others, your reward still grows. You can build a well, plant a tree, donate to a mosque or a school, print Islamic knowledge, or leave good children who pray on your behalf. All these continue to earn you rewards each time someone is benefited.

The Prophet ﷺ stated:

When a human being dies, all his actions are terminated except three: Sadaqah Jariyah, good knowledge, or a pious child who prays on his behalf.”

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1631)

By providing Sadaqah for the sake of Allah, you invest in your akhirah and create a legacy that endures.

Conclusion

Sadaqah for the sake of Allah is not only a charitable act — it’s a journey that purifies your heart, gives you the joy of Allah, and brings you reward in the Hereafter. Whether it’s a little bit of coins or an opulent gift, if you donate with a genuine heart, Allah will bless you beyond imagination. Start today. Give with sincerity, give from the heart, and give solely for the sake of Allah.

Allah promises in the Qur’an, “Whatever you spend in the way of Allah, He will replace it.” (Surah Saba 34:39)

What will today’s Sadaqah be? Will it be a kind word, a smile, or something even more lasting like Sadaqah Jariyah?
