Struggling On as One of Gaza’s Walking Dead Is Destroying My Soul
Gaza war survivors’ lives are full of unimaginable challenges. Each day’s a battle to continue going forward in spite of the overwhelming devastation and pain that invades our environment. The war has left us broken and shattered but still determined to survive.
The Reality of Survival in Gaza
Having been a Gaza war survivor , I can attest that getting life started again after destruction is not easy. The war destroyed buildings, schools, hospitals, and economies. But the destruction does not stop with building destruction. It annihilates the spirit and leaves scars in the psyche that take too long to heal.
As I walk through what is left of my hometown, I am among the walking dead — human souls that walk but carry the signs of loss and despair in their eyes. Every morning, I wake up burdened with memories — the blasts of detonations, the cries of loved ones, and the constant fear of what tomorrow will bring.
Daily Struggles and Unseen Battles
Survival there is not just survival; it’s a daily struggle no one outside Gaza can even imagine. Clean water and food are still in short supply. There are frequent power cuts and it’s difficult to have a normal life. Healthcare is stretched thin, and mental health services are extremely limited.
In spite of all these, Gaza war survivors are immensely resilient. We care for and look after one another like families and communities. Our hope is rooted in the belief that sometime in the future, peace will triumph over fear.
The Emotional Toll on Gaza War Survivors
War not only burns down buildings — it breaks the heart. The killing of loved ones, neighbors, and friends leaves one wounded in ways that can’t be seen. All but a few come away from them haunted by anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Invisible wars but they are real.
I wrestle every day with a weight upon my heart. Some days, my very essence feels ripped from the inside out. But telling my story keeps me on track. It reminds me that I am not alone and that our voices are important.
Why the World Needs to Listen
Gaza war survivors are seldom well recorded. We are usually just headlines or figures. But standing behind every figure is a human being — with hopes, dreams, and a right to live in peace.
It’s significant that the world see the price of war in human lives. It’s not just that we need assistance in rebuilding infrastructure-wise, but we need to heal our hearts and our minds too. Assistance needs to encompass psychological treatment, education, and choices for a future.
Finding Strength in Survival
In spite of all this, I have faith in the resilience of the people of Gaza. We are not just survivors, but we are also fighters. We bear our scars proudly and march towards each new dawn determined to find light amidst the darkness.
The war attempts to kill us but never to take away our humanity. We are living proof of how even in the worst of circumstances, hope will thrive.
Conclusion
To be a Gaza war survivor is to have lived through the unthinkable. Everything was lost, yet more was gained in the form of unimaginable resilience. My heart hurts with loss but also holds within itself the unbreakable will to live and start again.
