What is Umrah?
Umrah is an Islamic pilgrimage to the Holy Kaaba in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. It involves a set of rituals that are meant to cleanse the soul and draw the believer closer to Allah. Although it is not obligatory like Hajj, it is a highly recommended Sunnah and a source of great blessings.
Importance of Umrah in Islam
Umrah has supreme religious importance in Islam, and it provides a chance for Muslims to cleanse their souls and beg for the mercy of Allah. According to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ:
“The performance of Umrah is expiation for the sins committed between it and the previous Umrah.”
(Sahih Bukhari and Muslim)
This Hadith highlights the great spiritual rewards of Umrah. It is a way of forgiveness for sins between two Umrahs, providing one with an opportunity to begin anew. To perform Umrah with sincerity and dedication purifies the heart, strengthens one’s faith, and attracts one to Allah.
Other than that, it also serves as a reminder that Hajj is an obligation, Umrah is a highly recommended Sunnah, and it grants one the opportunity to enjoy the blessings of the blessed pilgrimage throughout the year.
Difference Between Hajj and Umrah
Umrah:
When it comes to Umrah, it’s Sunnah (strongly recommended) but not obligatory. You are invited to perform it, yet you are not obligated. You can undertake this blessed trip anytime during the year, and it typically takes no more than a few hours.
Hajj:
On the other hand, Hajj is Fard (compulsory) for all Muslims who can perform it once in their lifetime. It must be performed on specific dates — between the 8th and the 13th of Dhul-Hijjah. The trip takes around 5–6 days, and rituals are conducted at various places such as Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah.
Step-by-Step Guide: How to Perform Umrah
Umrah includes four rites: Ihram, Tawaf, Sa’i, and HalqTaqsir. The list includes a step-by-step outline.
1. Ihram—Entering the State of Purity
Ihram is a state of purity that you have to enter before you perform Umrah. It is one of the finest illustrations of dressing up in a certain fashion and intent (niyyah) of doing Umrah.
Ihram should be entered at Meeqat, sets of locations including Dhul Hulayfah, Qarn al-Manazil, Yalamlam, Juhfah, and Dhat Irq. The staff will inform you when you approach the Meeqat if you are flying.
Before Ihram, make ghusl (ritual bath) or wudu (ablution). Cut your nails and get rid of any unnecessary hair.
Two unsewn white raiments are donned for men; women wear Islamic attire. Then mean by stating, “Labbaika Umrah” (O Allah, I am about to go for Umrah).
Finally, say the Talbiyah:
“Labbaik Allahumma Labbaik, Labbaik Laa Shareeka Lake Labbaik. Innalhamma Wanni’mata Laka Walmulq, La Shareeka Lak.””
2. Tawaf—Circling the Kaaba
Tawaf is going around the Kaaba seven times anticlockwise. It represents unity and total submission to Allah. You perform Tawaf when you enter Masjid al-Haram in the state of Ihram. On completion, if possible, offer 2 rakats of Salah behind Maqam Ibrahim.
After completing the Tawaf, if possible, offer 2 rakats of Salah behind Maqam Ibrahim.
3. Sa’i—Walking Between Safa and Marwah
Sa’i is circling seven times between Safa and Marwah hills, which stand shoulder to shoulder to Masjid al-Haram. You start at Safa, turn your face towards the Kaaba, open your hands, and offer a prayer. Then proceed to Marwah and do the same, doing it seven times. Men are required to run between the two green flags, which are known as Ramal.
4. Halq or Taqsir—Shaving or Trimming the Hair
Umrah’s last and final step is as follows…
For men : You can either shave your entire head (halq) or trim all over (taqsir).
For women: Trim a small portion of hair, about the length of a fingertip, from the end.
Once you’ve completed this, you exit the state of Ihram, and your Umrah is now complete—Alhamdulillah!
Checklist: Things to Carry for Umrah
When you are setting out to arrange to perform your holy pilgrimage to Umrah, the following is a quick checklist of what to bring to ease your pilgrimage:
Ihram Clothing: Forget not the plain unstitched white sheets in the case of men or demure frocks in the case of women.
Slippers/Sandals: Walking will be the mode, so ensure that you wear comfortable footwear and easy ones to slip on when you are engaging in prayers.
Unscented Toiletries: Refrain from all scented toiletries since they are forbidden while in the Ihram state.
Prayer Mat: A small and foldable prayer mat will be useful for your prayer at revered places.
Pocket Qur’an or Dua Book: Pocket Qur’an or dua book for immediate prayers and being connected to Allah.
Small Backpack: Light and comfortable bag for easy reach to your priorities without needing the use of hands.
Water Bottle and Snacks: Keeping a water bottle and snacks with you at all times will make sure that you are going to be energized during your trip.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- During performing Umrah, there are some common mistakes that the pilgrims should avoid.
- One of the most crucial errors that must be avoided is failure to state the niyyah (intention) at Meeqat, since it is a very critical aspect of commencing the pilgrimage.
- Another error is conversing or messaging on your cell phone when the time of initiating Tawaf or Sa’i comes along because these are moments of complete communion with Allah, and therefore it would be better to remain connected.
- Forcing other people to touch the Black Stone is another blunder; each person has his or her own space and time, and therefore there is no compelling reason to force and hurry other people. Additionally, proper order should be observed in the rituals so that the pilgrims may feel the continuity of the pilgrimage.
- Most significantly, remember that Umrah is a worship time, so be humble, patient, and submissive to the spiritual process rather than the rituals themselves.
Final Thoughts
Umrah offers a unique opportunity for individual spiritual growth to enable one to rekindle their faith, seek forgiveness from Allah, and come closer to Him; hence, it is not merely a physical journey. Although it appears initially to be overwhelming, once you understand the processes and their greater context, it is a journey of immense emotional bonding and spiritual enrichment.
The greatest aspect of Umrah is the sincerity of intent and degree of effort you provide at each stage of the trip; bear this in mind. Allah may accept your Umrah to Him, ease it and make it smooth for you, and bless and grant peace upon you on the trip. Thank you.
